In Thomas Malory’s retelling of the Arthurian romance, two brothers, Balin and Balan meet on the field and do not recognize each other - one caked in mud, the other in a foreign armor. They mortally wound one another, and only then identify themselves. Weeping they die in mutual embrace.
This music is a similar story, but only in its telling.
